Level Changes and Shot Entries

A takedown is usually decided before contact. The level change is what turns a striking posture into a wrestling posture without announcing it.

A level change is a drop of the hips, not a bend of the back. The head and chest stay upright while the knees and hips lower, so the posture at the bottom of the drop is one you could still punch from. In MMA the level change carries extra weight because it doubles as a striking feint and because a bad one โ€” head down, hands low โ€” walks you into a knee or a guillotine.

Key points

  • Drop by bending the knees and ankles while the spine stays close to vertical; the shoulders should stay above the hips.
  • Keep both hands high during the drop so the level change reads as a punch until the moment you commit.
  • Step the lead foot into the pocket before the hands touch anything; a shot that starts with the arms arrives late.
  • Penetration comes from the rear leg driving forward, and the knee should land close to the opponent's foot, not short of it.
  • Practice changing levels and returning to stance without shooting, so the movement stays a threat rather than a commitment.

Common mistakes

  • Bending at the waist so the head leads the movement, which offers the neck for a front headlock and the face for a knee.
  • Dropping the hands as the hips drop, giving away the shot a full beat early and inviting an uppercut.
  • Shooting from outside range so the penetration step lands short, leaving you on your knees with no forward drive left.

Put it into practice

Level change without the shot

  1. Set a rope or a partner's hand at chest height and change levels underneath it thirty times with the hands in guard.
  2. Use a mirror for ten repetitions and check that the spine stays vertical and the hands never drop below the chin.
  3. Add a jab before each level change, then a level change that returns to stance with no takedown attempt at all.
  4. Finish with ten penetration steps against a partner, stopping the moment your lead knee lands beside their foot.
